Help Guide for Using The Community

Welcome to the Draw & Sketch Awesome community! This is where you can share you project artwork, ask questions and meet other students. This help page will show how it works...

Private Groups

Depending on which course(s) you own, you'll see a corresponding group in the main menu of the community. Only people who own that course can see and access that group.

Group Channels

Within each private group, you'll see a number of channels. For example, each private group has a Say Hi / Q&A channel where you can introduce yourself or ask questions about course lesson.

Channels are a way to organise posts within the group. When you make a post, you'll choose which channel to post it in, and it should be obvious which is the best fit. Here's what channels look like:

The "All Posts" Feed

This is the home page of the community and it will show you all the posts from all the groups  and their channels you belong to.

At the top of the All Posts page you'll see a "Write Post" box where you can make your own post from:

How to Post Your Artwork

  • To post your artwork, click or tap in the Write Post box at the top of any page.
  • Add some text about what you're posting.
  • Click or tap the + button in the bottom left corner, and then the picture frame button to add your image.
  • If you're posting from the All Posts page, you'll need to choose the group and channel you want to post in.

Add a Profile Picture

Online groups and communities are much more meaningful where we can see real people behind the posts. You'll also find that you get significantly more engagement if you add a profile picture!

This is a nice private and secure community but if you really don't feel comfortable using a picture of yourself, use a picture of a pet or even a piece of your artwork.

Changing What Your Notifications You Get

By default, you'll get email and push notifications (on the app) when someone reacts or replies to your post, or sends you a direct message.

Notifications can either be really helpful or really annoying, and it all comes down to personal preference.

You can control what you get notified about and how you get notified here:

Sending Private/Direct Messages

You can send private or direct messages to other students and me. Please use this respectfully. 🙂

If you ever want to stop someone from messaging you, click the 3 dots on the their direct message thread and you'll see the option to block or report.

Using Hashtags

There aren't any built in hashtags within this community (like there are with ArtKula), however we can still make use of them.

Simply type the hashtag (starting with the # sign) somewhere into the text of your post. Other students can then search for that hashtag in the search bar.

If we all stick to the same hashtags, we can then search for artwork by project. Here is the hashtag format to use:

For Draw Awesome:

#DAproject1
#DAproject2
And so on...

For Sketch Awesome:

#SAproject1
#SAproject2
And so on...

(Tags aren't case sensitive so any combination will work)

The Draw Awesome App

The Draw Awesome app isn't required for accessing either the Sketch Awesome course lesson or this community.... but you may find it very handy!

If you take pictures of your artwork with your phone or tablet, and you have the app on that device too, it makes it very easy to share them with the community.

Either search for "Draw Awesome" in the App or Play store or tap one of the links below if you're reading this on a mobile or tablet:

If there's anything I haven't covered in this guide, please post your question in the Q&A channel.
